Quick Guide on how to go from Kuala Lumpur to Penang Island

Image

“Let’s cross the bridge when we get there” and “we’ll get there” is one of my expressions in life. I was really fascinated when couple of my friends went to Penang Island, I have no idea that there is another beautiful Island in Malaysia that exists.

If you are following my blog we went to Batu Caves first thing in the morning before we went to Penang Island , I know June 7 is holiday in Malaysia and it’s Agong’s Birthday it’s a National Holiday so we tried our best to rush from Batu Caves straight to Penang Island in Malaysia.

To give you some quick info about Penang Island is part of the state of Penang, on the west coat of Peninsular Malaysia. It was named Prince of Wales Island when it was occupied by theBritish East India Company on 12 August 1786, in honour of the birthday of the Prince of Wales, later King George IV. The capital, George Town, was named after the reigning King George III. *wikipedia

So without further ado here’s how we caught myself travelling from the busy streets of Kuala Lumpur Malaysia to the Beautiful Island of Penang and Georgetown, Malaysia.

  1. From Kuala Lumpur, take any Ekspress Train to Puduraya Bus Station (about 2.50RM/pax)
  2. From the train station you have to walk 10-15 minutes to Puduraya Bus Station (you will pass by China town along the way)
  3. Since its Saturday and Holiday at the same time the bus station is closed so there are barkers outside that will sell you tickets to Penang Island, but if you are planning during weekdays you can go inside the bus station and buy some tickets. For a quick guide on what Bus line travels from time to time and their schedules here’s the link of Journey Malaysia’s siteThe ticket price ranges from 45RM to 50RM one way (KL to Penang Island).   *If you’re planning to go to Georgetown you might wanna leave the bus when it reaches Butterworth Station, there would be a ferry that goes straight from Butterworth to Georgetown and its only for 1.20RM (back and forth)  and the ferry runs roughly 15-20 minutes and thakes the same amount of time to cover the 3km distance, from Georgetown you can take any Ekspress coach/bus to go to your hotel or you can just walk, Georgetown is pretty small so it’s easy to find. In our case our  bus went straight to Penang Island we passed the Penang bridge (is a dual carriageway toll bridge connects George Town on the island of Penang and Seberang Prai on the mainland of Malaysia on the Malay Peninsula. Its 13.5KM so it might eat up 30 minutes of your time )  so we have to take  take a cab from Penang Bus Station to Georgetown.
  4. We left Puduraya Bus Station at around 2:30 in the afternoon and reached Penang Island at around 7:30 in the evening   so its around 4-5  hours ride and my journey in Georgetown begins ….

Some photos I took while in the coach during the trip:

Now on how to go back:

From Georgetown  take Ekspress bus number 101  (1.5RM) and tell the driver to drop you off at the Ferry terminal you can take either the bus (which will pass the bridge) or the ferry (i do suggest to take the ferry) to Butterworth. The ferry is free since you already paid it on your way to Georgetown, now from Ferry terminal in Butterworth, you can now buy Bus ticket which only costs 45RM to Kuala Lumpur.

In regards to my Adventure in Georgetown , I will keep you posted, link will be provided here  –
